Frost-covered wheat grass

November Farm News

Fall is rapidly progressing here on the Palouse, complete with frosty mornings, breezy afternoons, chilly evenings, and cozy nights; and the guys on the farm are (mostly) keeping warm as they stay busy finishing up fall planting and getting ready for winter.

Finishing fall work

About two-thirds of the farm has gone into winter wheat: both soft white and hard red. We're keeping consistent with the soft white variety this year, sticking with Shine, but switching it up to a blend of Kamiak and Tandem for the hard red winter wheat. Most of the must-do field work is wrapped up and focus has turned to equipment repairs and maintenance. Sometimes the never-ending list of farm projects feels overwhelming, and sometimes it feels like a blessing to have so many reasons to get out of the shop and be outside for a while.

Fingers crossed for good weather

We had an incredibly dry summer and fall and now we're hoping for a lot of precipitation to come this winter. Between post-harvest rain and over-winter snow we would like to see some prolonged weather events for the next few months to get the water table topped up. As always, we'd love for the snow to fall before the ground is frozen. This both protects the young winter wheat crop and insulates the soil, so when the snow later melts all the water goes into the dirt instead of running off of the frozen ground and draining away from the fields. November has been reasonably damp thus far, and the forecast going into December looks pretty good, but our fingers will be cramping from being perpetually crossed all the same. Send us some good vibes, please? Everyone get your rain dance pants on and wish us luck.
