Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas

 We love the fact that you don't have to use boiled water to make our flour tortilla recipe! This flour tortilla recipe is fast and easy to make and, the best part of it is you probably have all the ingredients in your kitchen for making our homemade tortilla recipe.  This equates to the last minute save the day situation when your schedule doesn’t have time for a grocery store trip.

    We also love the fact that making our homemade tortilla recipe is a fun hands-on mixing experience.  We have discovered that mixing flour with our fingers is a great stress reliever, to say the least.  It’s kind of like when we used to get the play dough out and dig right in.  We have fond memories of those days and hope you do too!

    Our hard red spring wheat berries ground into flour give these tortillas an amazing burst of flavor, much more than any tortilla you purchase in the store.  And, one of the best parts of this recipe is that the tortillas can be made any size you wish, depending on what you will be using them for.

    These tortillas are truly amazing and always loved by everyone.  Quick and easy makes it fun so that you can get your kids involved in the mixing experience.  They just love to use their hands!

      Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas

      Ingredients

      • 4 cups Palouse Brand Whole Wheat Bread Flour
      • 1 tsp. salt
      • 2 tsp. baking powder
      • 2 tbsp. shortening
      • 1 ½ cups water

      Directions

      1. Whisk the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl. Mix in the shortening with your fingers until the flour resembles cornmeal. Add the water and mix until the dough comes together. Place on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with saran wrap and rest dough for 30 minutes.
      2. Divide the dough in 8 equally sized pieces for large tortillas, make each piece into a ball. Lightly flour your surface and rolling pint o roll each dough ball into a thin, round tortilla. Roll out from the center of each dough ball, picking up and turning 90 degrees every time you roll to get a round tortilla.
      3. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
      4. Place tortilla in a dry, hot skillet for 5 seconds on the first side and 5 seconds on the second side. The tortillas will become slightly bubbly and turn a slight golden brown.
      5. Once cooked, stack and wrap tortillas in a damp towel or toweled tortilla warmer so they will not become crunchy while you finish cooking the remaining tortillas.
