Authentic Cream of Wheat Recipe

Most of us grew up eating cream of wheat, it usually tops most breakfast lists from healthy breakfast ideas to easy breakfast ideas. This recipe is quick and easy and require minimal ingredients. The recipe only calls for 3 when you add the toppings you choose you may be looking at three to ten, which is still minimal in this world or gourmet cooking. One thing our recipe lacks when compared to the instant is that it requires some prep work, but within thirty minutes you can prep a healthy breakfast for the whole week, making it a great addition to your meal planning.
Which leads us to the most commonly asked question about cream of wheat. Is cream of wheat healthy? Well that depends on your definition of healthy, but it is an amazing source of whole grain nutrition. Our recipe isn’t enriched like the boxed can so the cream of wheat nutrition varies from the label on the box. However you will still find that half cup of wheat berries contains 20% of your daily iron*. Also the wheat berries are sugar and sodium free.
But what is cream of wheat? If you make it your self it is wheat berries and milk, which differs greatly from the ingredient list you will see on an instant cream of wheat box. The the fact that we also use Non-GMO, grown in the USA wheat berries that you can trace to the very field they grew in, also help you know where your food is coming from. If you want to decrease the amount of processed foods in your day this breakfast recipe is the right choice.

‘Once your wheat berries are cooked, drain and store in fridge for the week.’
May they be frozen instead? It’s just the two of us now, so cream of wheat once a week is what we do. Seven cups is a lot for us! Thank you. Blessings~ Candy

Finally got around to trying this recipe. It was absolutely delicious – so much better than the stuff in the box. Topped with almond butter, honey, cinnamon and berries. Yum!

Hi Carol – Thanks for your comment we are starting to look at using the instapot more!

How about recipes on how to change for the instant pot? There’s a huge group I follow on Facebook where we post how to adapt recipes we love. Your beans and recipes including Instant Pot adaptions sure would be a hit with all of us instant pot lovers. Thanks!

Hi Henry, we have never tried that but we don’t see why that wouldn’t work. We would recommend trying a medium grind and then closely watch your cooking times as they might be a little shorter starting off with a ground product. Let us know how it turns out!

I’m interested in trying this recipe, but I don’t have a blender. Could I grind the wheat first before step 1? If so would you grind coarse, medium or fine?

We forgot to mention that this recipe would work great for any of our wheat berries!

Hi Dawn! Thanks for leaving a comment and looking at our blog! To make this recipes simply cook the wheat berries overnight in the crock pot. Take two cups of wheat berries and 7 cups of water place in crock pot on low for 8-12 hours. Then simply blend and simmer with milk in the morning!

Can’t wait to try this… on your home page though, you’ve written about a crock-pot recipe. My friend and I are eager to try that… with the Red Spring Wheat?
    Thank you!
